Essential Guide for DIY Crafters: A Super Detailed 2025 Beginner's Guide to Stop Wasting Money

Opening Chat

While scrolling through my social media feed today, I saw many exquisite handicrafts. Those adorable trinkets and unique home decorations were truly enviable. To be honest, I used to be just like you, itching to create whenever I saw these works, but always felt I wasn't naturally gifted at crafting.

Until one day, I finally gathered the courage to start my own DIY journey. From a novice who couldn't even draw a straight line to now being able to complete various creative projects independently, the journey has been both bitter and sweet. Looking back, those failed experiences have become my most valuable assets.

Getting Started

I still remember my first DIY attempt when I had just moved into my new home last year. The new house was spotlessly clean but felt lacking in personality. I initially planned to buy decorations from home stores, but was shocked by the price tags — a simple decorative painting cost hundreds, and a small ornament could cost thousands, which seemed ridiculous!

While still hesitating, I came across a video of a content creator making decorations. Watching her create beautiful pieces with simple materials, I suddenly realized: instead of spending big money on others' creations, why not make my own unique pieces?

That's how my DIY journey began. It was certainly chaotic at first, often struggling with tool and material choices. But as I gained experience, I gradually found my way. Looking back, DIY brought me more than just cost savings. The sense of achievement after completing each piece made me forget about work stress. Moreover, through DIY, I met a group of like-minded friends, and we often exchange experiences and share our works online and offline.

Basic Tools

Regarding tools, many beginners get intimidated by various professional equipment. Actually, there's no need to worry - you only need some basic tools to get started. Let me share my tool list, all of which are proven essentials.

First is the hot glue gun. This is practically a DIY miracle worker, essential for almost every project. I recommend choosing an adjustable temperature model, as different materials require different temperatures. For example, foam materials need low temperature, while wood requires high temperature. I use a 98-yuan adjustable temperature hot glue gun from an online shop, which has served me well for over two years.

Scissors are another important tool. I suggest having two pairs: one regular pair for paper and fabric, and another industrial pair for plastic, leather, and other hard materials. This prevents regular scissors from getting dull from cutting hard materials. I learned this lesson when I had to buy a new pair after using one pair for all materials.

Rulers and utility knives are also essential. It's best to buy steel rulers as they don't get scratched easily and provide more accurate measurements. For utility knives, choose one with a comfortable grip since some projects require extended use. I now use an ergonomically designed utility knife, which though expensive (68 yuan), is very comfortable to use.

If budget allows, I recommend getting a small toolbox. This helps keep tools organized and easy to find. I didn't have a toolbox initially and often lost things, but after buying a three-tier toolbox, I finally got my chaotic tools in order.

Woodworking Projects

When people think of DIY, woodworking often comes to mind first. Indeed, woodworking projects can bring a strong sense of achievement. However, as a beginner, I recommend starting with small pieces and gradually gaining experience.

Making Decorative Shelves

A decorative shelf is a very suitable project for beginners. The materials are simple: a 30x20cm wooden board, four 15cm wooden strips, and some decorative stickers or paint. The biggest advantage of this project is its simple structure, and even if you fail, the cost is low.

When I first made a decorative shelf, I knew nothing about woodworking. The wooden board I bought had burrs on the edges, and I spent a long time sanding it smooth. Assembly was even more chaotic - I was too eager to put things on before the hot glue dried, resulting in a crooked shelf. However, after several attempts, I can now skillfully make various styles of decorative shelves.

Regarding the steps for making a decorative shelf, I suggest doing it this way: first, sand the surface of the board and strips smooth - this step is crucial as it determines the final quality. Then mark the installation positions for the strips on the board, ensuring all four angles are consistent. Next, use hot glue to fix the strips to the board, remember to complete this in one go to ensure overall stability. The final step is decoration - you can add stickers you like or paint patterns.

I now have a self-made three-tier decorative shelf on my desk, displaying succulents, scented candles, and some small ornaments. Every time I look at it, I'm reminded of my DIY journey, which feels particularly heartwarming.
